BWW Reviews: The Fabulous NICK LOWE at the Sheldon

Nick Lowe performed a solo session at the Sheldon Concert Hall this past week and put on a whale of a good show, mining his catalog for a collection of material both old and new. Though perhaps lumped unfairly in with the New Wave acts back in the late 70's and early 80's, Lowe actually practices a form of rock and roll that owes more to the great songwriters of the 50's and 60's than any synth-driven band from that era. He and his band Rockpile were part of a wave, but it was more of a throwback to simpler times when music was all about the relationship between young boys and girls, and not overly concerned with the latest technology or latest fashion.

BWW CD Reviews: HERE COMES THE SUN, A Lovely Tribute to the Beatles by David Lanz and Friends

Pianist David Lanz, with able assistance from Gary Stroutsos (woodwinds), Walter Gray (cello) and Keith Lowe (bass), has put together a sequel of sorts to his wonderful album of Beatles songs, Liverpool, with a new collection called HERE COMES THE SUN. This time around he includes a terrific cut from the quiet Beatle, the late George Harrison (who was/is actually my favorite of the fab four). It's another masterpiece of subtlety and charm, perhaps even more lovely from than the first. Lanz is going to promote the new work with a small tour, so be sure to catch him live if you have the opportunity.

BWW Reviews: Freddie Washington Quartet Kicks off Black Rep's Sunday Concert Series in Fine Fashion

A member of the St. Louis Blues and Jazz Hall of Fame returned to his roots this past Sunday bringing a trio of talented musicians in tow. The Freddie Washington Quartet, led by the saxophonist extraordinaire, put on a blistering 90 minute set at the Grandel this past Sunday (1/29/2012) that showcased Washington and his fellow musicians' considerable talents. Though the turn out was less than stellar, you couldn't tell by the music that flowed from this group. This was one evening that a lot of people will be kicking themselves for missing.

HotCity Theatre Opens Season with THE WINNERS, 9/9-9/24

HotCity Theatre, a professional theatre company with a focus on contemporary programming and new play development announces the opening of THE WINNERS by David L. Williams. THE WINNERS was the winning script for HotCity's 5th Annual GreenHouse New Play Festival in June 2010. It takes a serious look at responsibility and freedom and mayleave the audience questioning what problems money can truly solve in life.

The Soulard Blues Band was formed in 1978 by bassist Art Dwyer, and includes: vocalist Marty Abdullah, guitarist Tom Maloney and drummer Kirk Grice. They are one of the longest-lasting acts in the St. Louis area, with nine recordings to their credit, and a 13-year-run as 'Best Blues Band' in The Riverfront Times annual poll.
