Michael Pollack, a freshman at Vanderbilt University got the chance to accompany a living legend in January. During a Q & A session featuring legendary singer Billy Joel, Pollack stood up and told the singer, "My favorite song of yours is 'New York State of Mind,'" and went on to boast, "I was very fortunate to play with [Joel's saxophone player] Richie Cannata many times in New York City and I was wondering if I could play it with you."
Without a moment's hesitation, Joel replied, "OK" and brought the student up on stage. After conferring about what key he performed the song in, Pollack sat down at the piano and began a stunning introduction to the classic hit, compelling Joel to put on his shades and belt out the tune to an enthusiastic audience.
Following the performance, Joel asked the student his name and told the crowd, "Michael Pollack, Remember that name," adding, "Guy's got chops!"
