'Solo @ the cell' Celebrates Nine Artists Through 10/21

the cell presents SOLO @ the cell - special solo performance series playing right in the heart of Chelsea for the month of October. Under the direction of Founding Artistic Director Nancy Manocherian and Artistic Director Kira Simring, the cell celebrates the works of nine different NYC solo artists, all with varying backgrounds, featuring both original pieces and unique adaptations.

SOLO @ the cell (338 W. 23rd Street) plays Friday, October 1 through Thursday October 21, 2010. All evening performances are at 8:00PM, with weekend matinees at 2:00PM. Matinee performances will also feature wine and cheese, as well as talk-backs with the performers.

THE CONFESSIONS OF A DOC HOLLIDAY

Adapted and performed by Darrell Larson and directed by Kira Simring - Friday, October 1 and Saturday, October 2 at 8 PM.The last moments in the storied life of John Henry 'Doc' Holliday, western icon and friend of Wyatt Earp, as he struggles to complete a summative letter to his favorite relative, a cousin who has become a nun. Asking her to consider the letter a confession, he gives his considered, professional and eloquent opinions on drinking, gambling, killing, poetry, history, truth and dying every day. Loosely based on the novel 'Bucking the Tiger' by Bruce Olds.

ABC... L'ITALIANO SI IMPARA COSI' (HOW TO LEARN ITALIAN IN ONE HOUR)

Written, directed and performed by Laura Caparrotti, with a sketch written by Uberto Kovacevich - Tuesday, October 5 at 8 PM. School cannot start without the great PROFESSOR MARGHERITA!! A very unique method used by Miss Margherita, a despotic Teacher/Diva, to teach Italian to any Italian student in just one hour. Starting from what is more well-known in the US about Italy - Love, Food, Literature, Art, Tourism and Music - Miss Margherita will explain and teach the Italian language, culture, art and tradition to the audience. A FUNNY AND EDUCATIONAL PERFORMANCE good for any audience!

...and then you go on. An anthology of the Works of Samuel Beckett

Adapted and Performed by Bob Jaffe. Directed by Peter Wallace -- Wednesday October 6 at 8 PM. "A rich best of Beckett." - Boston Globe ...Draws from 13 of Samuel Beckett's works, spanning 44 years (1936 - 1980). Jaffe portrays a single, composite character in this "tour de force solo performance piece" (CurtainUp.com), a character who finds hope and connection in the face of despair. The New York Times called the production "a lionizing tribute to this great Irish writer, and it is inarguably a deserving one.

JUST DON'T TOUCH ME AMIGO

Written & performed by Fernando Gambaroni, and directed by Jose Zayas - Thursday October 7 at 8 PM. A one-man show written and performed by Fernando Gambaroni. A comedy about a guy who just doesn't get that his loneliness is such a turn-off. It's also a comedy about loneliness shown from different perspectives, from locals who tend to believe that foreigners don't have a right to criticize, to newcomers who have trouble understanding their new reality within its own context.

BAD CONNECTIONS?

A new play written by Michael Levesque, directed by Thom Fogarty and performed by Paul Cosentino - Friday and Saturday October 8 and 9 at 8 PM.BAD CONNECTIONS? follows the lives of nine eccentric and delightful New Yorkers making their way through a rainy Manhattan day as they face tragedy, loss, pain, hope, understanding, and forgiveness ... and how they might be getting it all wrong - or maybe not!
