The first film adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice's classic rock opera JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR finds its way to Blu-ray for the very first time on May 7, 2013 - admittedly a little late for Easter baskets, but more than welcome on the shelf for Broadway babies of any religion anyway.
The 1973 feature film adaptation of the rock musical tracing the last seven days in the life of Jesus Christ, JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR, previously has appeared in Special Edition form on DVD, complete with a behind-the-scenes retrospective featuring Tim Rice, star Ted Neeley and director Norman Jewison, as well as a thoughtful and intriguing commentary track by Jewison. No word on what, if any, special features from past DVD editions will be ported over for this new Blu-ray release.
JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR stars Ted Neeley as Jesus Christ, Carl Anderson as Judas Iscariot, Yvonne Elliman as Mary Magdalene and Barry Dennen as Pontius Pilate. The film was released in 1973 and was a huge hit, earning more than $10 million in its original release. Subsequently, Andrew Lloyd Webber has supervised two home video versions of the piece, first with a 2000 film and most recently with an HD capture of the new 2012 UK arena tour starring Ben Forster, Tim Minchin and Melanie Chisholm.
The 1973 feature film is currently available in HD from iTunes, but this will be its first appearance in the Blu-ray format on disc in the US to date.
