Golden Globe-winning LUTHER star Idris Elba has revealed that he plans to take the next year off from acting and focus exclusively on the lesser-known music side of his career, according to a new interview.
Elba - who starred Off-Broadway in 2001's TROILUS & CRESSIDA and has since gone on to much success on the small screen and big screen with his role in the THOR franchise and many other notable projects - says that music will come first for him in 2013 and has already set up shop in the UK at a nightspot in Kilburn as a DJ under the pseudonym Driis (a name which he has also released albums under already, as a matter of fact).
He says his plans will please his own heart of hearts, if not those of his legions of fans: "This year, I'm not going to work as an actor and I'm going to put my mind into music. It's a progression thing with me. I want to make music but I don't want to shove it down people's throats. People are just barely getting to know me as an actor. But I do it from the heart, I'm not doing it for money - I just enjoy doing it."
In speaking of musical partnerships new and old - among them, Jay-Z and Mumford & Sons - Elba recalls, "I've been asked to do lots of collaborations. I did something with Milk, which is a great band and an odd collaboration, I've done stuff with Jay-Z on his album American Gangster, so there's bits and pieces that I'm just going to keep moving forward with."
Indeed, Elba appeared in Ridley Scott's AMERICAN GANGSTER as well as made a mark on the tie-in soundtrack album and solo album of the same by Jay-Z.
Most recently, Elba directed and starred in the video for Grammy-winning bluegrass band Mumford & Sons music video "Lover Of The Light".
Who knows? Maybe he will be the first James Bond to sing his own theme song if reports he is next in line after Daniel Craig have any validity. We have all the time in the world to find out - but, evidently, it will be at least a year before we know for sure given Elba's plans.
