Hillfolk Noir, Mindy Smith and Eilen Jewell Set for Boise Contemporary Theater's 2012-13 Music Series

Join BCT for another great year of music. Hillfolk Noir, Mindy Smith and Eilen Jewell will be performing as part of the 12-13 BCT Music Series. For the first time BCT is offering a Series Ticket, allowing you to see all three performances for only $60.

Hillfolk Noir, back from their European Tour, will bring their Signature Sound to the BCT stage on Saturday, September 15. Fronted by singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Travis Ward, Hillfolk Noir’s peculiar take on traditional acoustic mountain music is filtered through a half-century of folk, country and rock ‘n’ roll and fed by an affinity for Medicine Show culture and Depression-era string-band blues. The band calls it Junkerdash, which has multiple definitions up to and including “psychedelic swamp-shack rags.” However, if you’re looking for something neat and tidy to place in print or casual conversation, feel free to use current music-journalism parlance and call it “indie folk.”

On Friday September 28, 2012 Mindy Smith will take the stage. Known for her “smartly written folk and country-tinged tunes” (People) and “her bright soprano…” (Rolling Stone), critically lauded Nashville-based singer-songwriter Mindy Smith released her fifth studio album on Giant Leap/TVX Records June 26. The self-titled effort is her first album of new material since 2009’s Stupid Love and her first as an independent artist. Her Vanguard Records debut album, One Moment More, went on to earn numerous critical accolades, featured the hit single “Come to Jesus,” and sold over 300,000 copies. She subsequently released Long Island Shores (Vanguard, 2006), My Holiday (Vanguard, 2007), and Stupid Love (Vanguard, 2009).

Eilen Jewell, a shimmering singer/songwriter with a burnished voice and Idaho ties, closes the music series on Saturday May 4, 2013. The Boston Globe calls her music “Emotionally raw and riveting.” and during the NPR segment Song of the Day the reviewer said, “She's got a sweet and clear voice with a killer instinct lurking beneath the shiny surface.”
