Following its critically praised theatrical release, Mark Meatto's (The Ambassador) HOW TO GROW A BAND releases today across digital platforms. Filmed with uncommon access, HOW TO GROW A BAND chronicles the first steps of Punch Brothers musical journey, looking behind the scenes at the decisions and compromises that must be made by artists looking to evolve and survive.

The documentary follows mandolin virtuoso (and MacArthur Foundation "Genius") Chris Thile through a turning point in his life and musical career. By age 26, Thile had already reached some significant career highs, winning Grammy Awards for both his solo records and his work with the platinum-selling, pop-bluegrass trio Nickel Creek. But in a move that stunned fans in 2006, Thile and Nickel Creek went on "indefinite hiatus." HOW TO GROW A BAND explores the birth and evolution of the progressive bluegrass group, Punch Brothers: the tensions between individual talents and group identity, between art and commerce, and between innocence and wisdom.

HOW TO GROW A BAND world premiered at the 42nd Annual Nashville Film Festival in April 2011 before screening at Newport Folk Festival, Telluride Bluegrass Festival, the Vancouver International Film Festival and Hardly Strictly Bluegrass. The film opened theatrically at New York's Village East Cinema in April 2012 and then continued on to a fifteen-city U.S. tour.
