Winter's Eve at Lincoln Square
DENNIS LICHTMAN'S BRAIN CLOUD
"My brain is cloudy, my soul is upside-down... When I get that low-down feeling, I know the blues must be someplace around." - Bob Wills, the King of Western Swing
Enjoy the Brain Cloud's exuberant take on "western swing" in this special early evening concert that's part of this year's Winter's Eve at Lincoln Center Square celebration. At the heart of Brain Cloud is the pairing of mastermind multi-instrumentalist Dennis Lichtman with inimitable vocalist extraordinaire Tamar Korn. The sextet's springboard is the New Orleans-meets-Texas, strings-meet-horns, jazz-meets-country sonic mishmash that Bob Wills perfected on his mid-1940's radio broadcasts. In addition to Lichtman and Korn, the Brain Cloud features Skip Krevens (guitar and vocals), Raphael McGregor (steel guitar), and Andrew Hall (bass). Raymond Scott ORCHESTRETTE (RSO)
Celebrating the music of Raymond Scott
Deemed, "The Gertrude Stein of Dada Jazz," composer and inventor Raymond Scott rose to prominence in the late 1930s leading a six-piece Quintette which performed novelties that were part jazz and part chamber music. Warner Brothers music director Carl Stalling adapTEd Scott's controlled mayhem in Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck cartoons, bringing immortality to many Scott themes, later revived when songs like his classics "Powerhouse" "The Toy Trumpet" and "Twilight in Turkey" were featured in Ren & Stimpy¸ and paid homage to by artists as diverse as Don Byron, Soul Coughing, MadLib, and They Might Be Giants. Formed by producer and Scott authority Irwin Chusid, the New York City-based Raymond Scott Orchestrette (RSO) brings Scott's legacy into the 21st century, performing modernistic interpretations of his best-known works. KOOL AND TOGETHER
Where Jimi Hendrix's Band of Gypsys left off is exactly the spot where Kool and Together was born. Inspired by the family band dynamics of The Jackson Five, Charles Sanders formed the band with his sons Charles Jr., Tyrone and Joe in 1970 in Victoria, Texas. Kool and Together forged a sound that effortlessly blended the screams of Psychedelic Rock with the Funk and Soul of Motown. After more than 30 years, the original members of Kool and Together have reunited, joined by their daughters, to tour in support of their first full length release Original Recordings 1970-77 on Heavy Light Records. CHRIS VELAN
Presented in collaboration with NewSong Music
Motivated by a range of influences spanning 70s' singer-songwriters, blues, rock, 80s alternative, West African music and reggae, Montreal-based singer-songwriter and NewSong Recordings artist Chris Velan's continues his musical journey carving out his own path. Velan's fourth studio album Fables For Fighters produced by renowned producer Iestyn Polson (David Gray) finds Velan at his most poetically versatile. Sonically, it has a quality to it that is both timeless and new, intimate and cinematic, open and claustrophobic, haunting and reassuring. Thematically, the songs strive to balance the pains of struggle with the hope of transformation; the very personal search for one's place in the world.
