Deutsche Grammophon Releases All-New Box Set of Gustavo Dudamel Leading the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra, includes Symphonies by Bruckner, Sibelius and Nielsen, Available September 13th

Available on your PLAY MPE player

One of the many milestones in Gustavo Dudamel's career was his appointment as Principal Conductor of the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra on April 12, 2006, a position he assumed with the start of the 2007-08 season. Outside of Venezuela this was Dudamel's first appointment and his first long-term collaboration with a single ensemble. The collaboration has produced many exciting concerts and elicited high praise from the press and public alike. To celebrate Deutsche Grammophon will release a 3-CD box set of live recordings which includes symphonies by Bruckner, Sibelius and Nielsen, available September 13th. Click here to watch Dudamel talk about the recordings.

Most of Gustavo Dudamel's recordings have focused on either the Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra of Venezuela or the Los Angeles Philharmonic, so it is with great pride that Deutsche Grammophon releases a set devoted to the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra, an ensemble that has meant so much to the conductor. Founded in 1905, the orchestra has a long and illustrious history including a number of performances led by the composers Sibelius and Nielsen. In 1997 the orchestra was appointed The National Orchestra of Sweden and has toured the USA, Europe, Japan and the Far East. Deutsche Grammophon has released a number of GSO recordings over the years, including an acclaimed series with Neeme Järvi in the 1990s.

At their first performances together in August 2005 Dudamel and the GSO felt a natural connection which quickly led to the conductor's appointment. Though these were Dudamel's first encounters with Scandinavian music he quickly developed a taste for it and has since scheduled it often. Dudamel's uniquely Latinate passion and energy have brought new life to works that the orchestra had performed for decades and his interpretations have found favor with international audiences. Yet, it is the Scandinavian recognition that has meant the most, including the praise of respected critic Carl-Gunnar ?hlén after a Stockholm performance of Nielsen's Fifth Symphony: "Neither on record nor in concert have I experienced his Fifth Symphony so boundlessly expressive, so clearly detailed, so dreaming in its introduction and so life-affirming in its final course of events" (Svenska Dagbladet).

Gustavo Dudamel will perform with the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra in Europe through much of the September. He then returns to the US for a series of concerts as Music Director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, which will be followed by concerts with the Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra of Venezuela on tour in Europe. With orchestras from Venezuela to Sweden to the US, Gustavo Dudamel performs with a unique combination of passion, energy and precision and is at all times a living example of his belief that "music is a fundamental human right."
