BWW TV: Michael Cerveris Performs in American Songbook for Lincoln Center!

Lincoln Center's acclaimed series American Songbook has returned to the Allen Room for its fourteenth season celebrating the diversity of American popular song. For 16 nights, the series is exploring the best of the golden age of musical standards through to today's most dynamic songwriting. The series continued on January 21, with a concert by Michael Cerveris and below, we bring you a clip from the performance!

This Broadway star has performed in punk bands and rock musicals, terrified audiences as Sondheim's Sweeney Todd on Broadway and took home a Tony for his role in Sondheim's Assassins, and currently plays the mysterious character "the observer" in the hit TV series Fringe. Here, he brings us An Idea of South, a genre-defying recital/cabaret/hootenanny of songs ranging from the Carter Family and Johnny Mercer to Vic Chesnutt and Samuel Barber with guest musicians from New Orleans. Hear Cerveris on our stage before he starts rehearsal for the role of Juan Perón in the new Broadway revival of Evita.

Since it was launched in 1998, American Songbook has been dedicated to celebrating the extraordinary achievements of the popular American songwriter from the turn of the 20th century to the present day. Spanning all styles and genres from Tin Pan Alley and Broadway to the eclecticism of today's songwriters working in pop, cabaret, rock, folk and country, American Songbook traces the history and charts the course of the American song from its past and current forms to its future direction.
